Hello, I'm
Hamish Hunter
I am a Data infrastructure engineer. I manage the complex balance of keeping a Supercomputer (HPC) operational while architecting the broader Linux infrastructure that keeps the business running. My role is as much about strategy and roadmapping as it is about execution. I oversee everything from large-scale monitoring and incident response to ensuring the deep security of our systems. I’m heavily involved in the VMware/Aria and Broadcom ecosystem, using SaltStack to drive the automation that makes our scale manageable. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and helping others get comfortable with complex tools when I’m the subject matter expert on a project. I thrive under the pressure of diverse responsibilities and am always looking to master new architectures to keep our systems resilient and moving forward.

A brief overview of my career
Data Infrastructure Engineer
Edinburgh Napier University
I lead the architectural strategy and development of our enterprise Linux environment, specializing in the design of scalable, automated infrastructures. My role focuses on the long-term roadmapping of system evolution, utilizing SaltStack to develop 'Infrastructure as Code' workflows that standardize and secure our global footprint. By bridging the gap between high-level architecture and the technical rigors of HPC and VMware Aria operations, I transform complex operational requirements into resilient, automated frameworks that ensure peak performance and future-proof stability.
Assistant Data Infrastructure Engineer
Edinburgh Napier University
A core technical role focused on the resilience, security, and optimization of the University’s enterprise-level IT infrastructure. This position bridges the gap between physical hardware management and cloud-based services, requiring a high degree of technical versatility across Linux, Windows, and Virtualization platforms.
IS Modern Apprentice
Edinburgh Napier University
I completed a comprehensive two-year Modern Apprenticeship, transitioning from user-facing support to back-end infrastructure and high-performance computing. This rotation-based program provided a full-stack understanding of enterprise IT environments. It allowed me to create a concrete foundation into all alreas of IT
